What is a NJWA Board Member?

Being a Board Member of the New Jersey Water Association (NJWA) means helping guide the future of our Association and supporting water and wastewater utilities across the state. Board Members are leaders, stewards, and advocates who ensure that NJWA serves its mission with integrity and effectiveness.


The Role of a Board Member

  • Set policies and provide overall direction for the Association

  • Oversee the financial health and assets of NJWA

  • Hire, support, and evaluate the Executive Director

  • Represent the Association positively within the community

  • Ensure NJWA fulfills its mission and meets state and federal requirements


Who Can Serve?

Board Members are respected professionals in the water and wastewater field. They bring expertise, integrity, and a commitment to advancing rural water utilities.

Term of Service

Directors serve a three-year term, unless filling in for an unexpired position, as outlined in the bylaws.




What if I get a position as a Board Member?

What to Expect as a New Board Member (Click below to expand each answer)

What will my role be? You’ll help set the policies and direction of the Association, oversee finances, and represent NJWA in the community. Think of yourself as a steward of our mission.
How much time will it take? Board Members attend regular meetings, committee sessions, and occasional special events. Preparation before meetings is also expected so you can contribute meaningfully.
What support will I receive? You’ll have guidance from bylaws, clear policies, and the support of fellow Board Members and staff. Training and resources are provided to help you succeed.
How do I avoid conflicts of interest? Always act in the best interest of the Association, not personal gain. Avoid self-dealing or transactions that may benefit you directly.
